No Grassy Island this year on Bouvier Bay

We’ve been out and about this past week and the Lake St. Clair navigational landmark “islands” of Phragmites and other reeds are very low, and sometimes are underwater yet.   Brown brown run aground!

Making our way through the St. Clair Flats, cutting across Fisher Bay from the Sni to the cut which dumps us out on the Middle Channel in front of Brown’s Restaurant was a little tricky yesterday.  The Phagmites in this area have been virtually killed off & burned (remember?)… a good thing!  However, there was a little debating on where the cut was, and choosing wisely is important even in a 16′ boat.

Another hazard area is on Bouvier Bay, at Lake St. Clair’s north end near Munchies Bay swim area.  Forever there has been an island marked with tall Phragmites at the “marked entrance” to Bouvier Bridge Marina and the Raft Bar…. The island is gone!  You can see some dark water to the south of the markers, but I’m sure this year I’ll see some large boats run aground here.  Remember, Lake St. Clair does not have many “marked channels.”  If you see one…. you need to use it!
