The Historic Raft Bar Turns 50!
HAPPY 50 YEAR anniversary to the Raft Bar 2026! Fair Haven Michigan’s “The Raft Bar” history dates to 1976 on Lake St. Clair when Howard Chartrand purchased the building. According to the Images of Ira Township History Book, the structure itself has stood since around 1910, initially serving as a barn.

In the 1920s, during the heyday of the interurban railroad, the building transformed into a hotel and boat livery, complete with an ice cream parlor and lunchroom.
From the 1930s until Howard’s acquisition in 1976, the property passed through several owners and served a variety of purposes, including bait shop, boat rental, apartments, and bar.

The Raft Bar is cherished as a quaint local establishment where everyone feels welcome, as it remains a year-round mainstay in Fair Haven on Lake St. Clair.

The Raft became the new home for Minnowfest in the late 1970s. Annually held on the afternoon of each Good Friday, Minnowfest remains a testament to the enduring camaraderie and playful spirit of the Fair Haven community, ensuring this legacy continues to thrive with every spring gathering. Join the fun and join us in the celebration with a few minnows!
