2nd Annual Ladies on the Lake Ice Fishing Derby
The 2nd annual “Ladies on the Lake” Ice Fishing Derby will be held on northern Lake St. Clair February 2024. More details to follow. Below are details from the 2023 1st event.

January 20, 2023: The 1st Annual “Ladies on the Lake” Ice Fishing Derby on Lake St. Clair will be held February 18, 2023 – Free Fishing Weekend in Michigan! Hosted by Event Chair Julie Dease founder of Women of the Woods and Water and the waterfront On the Rocks Smokehouse Restaurant in Clay Township, MI.
ALL Women 18+ and Older are Welcome! Join up with ladies from a local, state and a national non-profit organization both experienced and beginners – American Daughters of Conservation, which is a national non-profit. They do all kinds of outdoor activities and conservation efforts across the country and a lot in Michigan. Also invited are the Michigan Women’s Hunting Club, which is a Facebook Group of about 1.4k ladies.
What will the day consist of?
The first part of the event will start at On The Rocks located on Northern Lake St. Clair inside Plagen’s Pier Marina @ 7479 Dyke Road, Clay Township, MI. We will start with an ice safety video made by the DNR. Then we will have some experienced ice fisherman explain the basics of ice fishing for the ladies who have never ice fished. We’ll explain jigging techniques, different kinds of lures, line, how to use augers, set up shanties, etc. Then we have the tournament portion. Everyone will be assigned to groups of mixed levels of experience with coaches for each team to assist and answer questions. We will be giving prizes to teams and individuals. Then we will go inside the restaurant to announce winners and have lunch.
When is the Ladies on the Lake Ice Fishing Derby on Lake St. Clair?
Sunday, February 18 – FREE FISHING in Michigan Weekend – No license Needed. 6:30am – 1pm.
How to Participate?
We are charging $20 a person which will all be given back out to winning contestants for prizes. Thank you to Tim at On the Rocks Smokehouse Restaurant who is donating the beautiful waterfront venue and food. We also have businesses donating prizes. We have participants, organizers and sponsors who are lending out extra shanties, heaters, rods, etc. to the newbies since many don’t have the gear. We also have a local bait shop, Hook One Bait & Tackle who will be offering small gear bundles below cost for whoever wants to buy them before the event.
As of January 20th, we have filled 15 of the first 30 spots available, with 15 or so volunteers.
