Salmon in Fair Haven February!

February 15, 2021:  Salmon caught ice fishing near Fair Haven, MI launch ramp.

According to Randy Terrian, Angler Advocate for the Lake Huron Citizens Advisory Committee “That is a very healthy looking Atlantic Salmon.  Looking at the picture I can see that the Adipose fin is clipped so that Atlantic Salmon is from one of the fish planted by Michigan Department of Natural Resources.   As far as where it was planted, the only way to find that out is to turn in the head.

The length and location of catch indicated on the Code Wire tag form (inside the head) is helpful to further document how well these fish are doing and the areas in which they are frequenting.  Turning in this head to Brian’s Blue Water Bait Shop (at the Fair Haven DNR Launch Site), and filling out a form at the shop would help determine where it was planted.  The fisherman, can fill out their contact information on the form and the fisherman will receive a letter indicating where the fish was planted and the date it was planted.
We are making progress with this fishery despite setbacks along the way.  We are learning a lot thanks to fisherman contributing heads of Adipose clipped Atlantic Salmon.   We really have came a long way since the inception of this program but we have much more to learn.  I would say that we are on the doorstep to making this fishery much more successful!”
